Norman Records Review (****)
I really like the idea of this record. The press release describes it as a celebration of “splatter-folk” and an homage “to the films of John Carpenter, Dario Argento, Lucio Fulci and George Romero, and to the writing of Edgar Allan Poe, Roald Dahl, Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Stephen King.” That sounds right up my street.

Interestingly, though, the oddly-monikered Thinguma*jigSaw eschew synths entirely in favour of musical saw, flute, melodica, ukulele, guitar, kalimba, voice and, er, “pretzel”(?), crafting spooky, mostly vocal-led numbers. There’s some nice wibbly thereminesque musical saw playing and the lyrics are suitably grim, but the emphasis here is definitely on the folky side of things, with the majority of the tracks having vocals.

At two LPs it’s very long, and if that’s not enough for you then they’ve got a CD out this week as well! To be honest I’ve been listening to a lot of Carpenter, Argento and Fulci soundtracks in the past couple of weeks (pretty much exclusively those and the ‘Bollywood Bloodbath’ and ‘Bollywood Steel Guitar’ soundtracks, if I’m honest), and while the melodies and atmospheres aren’t too far away on occasion, the lack of synthesizers and dominance of vocals here means this is an entirely different prospect to those soundtracks. Still lushly pretty and kind of spooky though.
